On 12 in May it will be exactly forty years ago that the Peugeot 505 was presented. We wanted to put the spotlight on this co-creation of Pininfarina and Peugeot. It was therefore nice that we met Cor Tjepkema some time ago. He is not only Peugeotfan, but also the owner of one of the oldest 505 models in the Netherlands. The GR driven by us rolled off the factory tire two months after the press introduction. We made a report with the Peugeot and the sympathetic owner. And enjoy it, to give you a taste.

The Peugeot 505 GR is flawless. Some time ago he was given a new and skillfully applied vert metallic paint coating, and the car has also been well conserved since then. The exterior distinction, enhanced by the straight lines and the slightly sloping passenger compartment, makes the 505 what it is: a beautiful and subtly drawn Peugeot. The delicate modesty of this is also reflected in the interior. Peugeot used neat upholstery materials and plastic. It reflects Peugeot's design philosophy during the 1970s and early 1980s. Functionality is pleasantly combined with vilein design sophistication, just enough to just snuggle under the skin. With an 505 that means: complete harmony, enhanced by the fine seating position that it offers soft and fine furniture. The civilized color scheme in the interior of this 505 does the rest, everything fits and everything fits.

Trusted technology

The GR version driven by us has the XN 1 engine from (among others) the 504 GL. The 45 degrees power source is connected to a four-speed gearbox. Very familiar. The 505 was developed on the chassis of the aforementioned 504 versions and that means: Mc Pherson with coil springs at the front, the hypoid swingarm with drive axles at the rear and four independently suspended wheels. The Mastervac powered braking system is equipped with disks at the front and drums at the 505 GR.

Enchanting ride with special stopover

We are going to drive the 505. The owner and the undersigned have a nice stop at the small but masterful museum of Peugeot dealer Haaima in Wirdum. The small Peugeot treasure room is a must for anyone with a Lion's heart. Both before and after the pleasant stopover, we also recognize the historic Peugeot mix of functionality and individuality in the 505. And that captivates. The freedom of movement, the balance between comfortable suspension and the fairly determined damping: it is unmistakably Peugeot. Yet the safely constructed 505 drives and feels just a little different than its also solidly constructed predecessor. The emphasis in the 505 is more on comfort. and the Peugeot from Cor Tjepkema shows early understeer. That is already happening at a civilized speed. No problem, because this Peugeot does sail with a quiet driving style and that fits with the dignity that the model presents.

Logical operating structure

This Peugeot is also thought of as the driver. The seating is fine, the operation in this 505 GR leaves nothing to be guessed. Most elements are in a logical place. The direction indicator is - unlike the predecessor - left, and the operating structure of levers and buttons is logical and well-arranged. Speaking of buttons: the presence of the switch is used to switch on the fan in the motor itself. Back to the operation of the driving functions. Linking, braking, shifting: everything is done in a confidence-inspiringly determined manner. The non-energized steering also communicates well, but at lower speeds, the steering does require the necessary effort.

Old famous engine with very good manners

The old XN 1 engine with double carburetor runs like a charm. Everywhere and in every gear, the 1.971 cc engine develops more than enough traction and power to be able to keep up with modern traffic. With a nicely spaced five-speed gearbox, the potential of the engine could be utilized even better and the otherwise not annoying engine noise could be further reduced. But the technicians also coordinated the four oppositions in the GR well. {Sans problème}. Those who demand a more solid performance from a classic 505 have come to the right place with a TI or STI (with injection, 1995 cc and a five-speed gearbox). As far as we are concerned, however, the GR is already a very nice starting point for going on long classic drives. He shows sufficient performance capacities, and they are united with a very nice appearance and touring characteristics. A great car, you drive it (as Cor Tjepkema once did) to France in no time. Transporting luggage is no problem, given the extremely generous trunk space.

A Peugeot in the very best tradition

It is not for nothing that (in Europe alone) this Peugeot was also a long-running model. The basis for the success was immediately laid by the first series of buildings, which, from an evolutionary point of view, uncovered the secret of Peugeot's historic and appealing house style. To present evolution and individuality while retaining the good. The beautifully preserved 505 GR by Cor Tjepkema is the living proof of that. In fact: this is a Peugeot in the best tradition of the brand. And that is a very, very telling compliment.
